Stage 1 in the research process is about defining your information needs and establishing a topic for research. Use a variety of information-seeking strategies to analyze and retrieve key sources. Whether you or your teacher has chosen the topic, be prepared to revisit your search strategies and re-define keywords as more is learned about the topic and the search is narrowed.

Stage 2 of the research process is about finding current, relevant, and authoritative information on your topic. At the high school level, students are expected to use a variety of sources and to document them. See Stage 4 on how to avoid plagiarism and copyright infringement.

STAGE 3: Processing Information

In Stage 3 the focus is on processing what you have learned so far through organizing, careful reading and evaluating the information gathered in Stage 2. Be prepared to go back to Stage 2 and re-focus your search if the information you have gathered does not adequately address your topic.

STAGE 4: Transferring Learning

Stage 4 is the final step in the research process. Successful students effectively transfer what they have learned through the research process in a coherent and appealing way. Use a variety of presentation styles and formats to provide interest and meaningful communication of ideas.
